W H McLeod played a major role in establishing and popularising the academic study of Sikhism outside India. McLeod, who died in New Zealand, on July 20, 2009, at the age of 77, is not as widely known as he should have been. However, for all those who study the Sikhs, their religion and culture, he has been the major international scholar who has left behind a body of work on Sikhism which will be a source of reference to the coming generations of Sikh scholars.
