Excellence among Sikhs

“Excellence among Sikhs”, was the theme of a function held some time ago at the Taj hotel in Chandigarh, and it seems that I forgot to post anything about it.

The function was organised by Dr Rajwant Singh, who is based in Washington DC and among those honoured were Rabbi Shergill, a well-known singer, Saran Singh, Editor of “Sikh Review” from Kolkata, Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal who cleaned the Bein River associated with Guru Nanak in Sultanpur Lodhi, Ranjodh Singh, head of Gurmukh Singh and Sons, from Ludhiana, Arpana Caur, an internationally renowned artist, Dr. Inderjit Kaur, head of the Pingalwara Institution in Amritsar, and the Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council, a Delhi-based NGO which has done humanitarian service since 1984.

Sardarni Inderjit Kaur, my mother, gave the plaque of honour to the Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council. I was asked to read out the citation for Sardar Saran Singh, which I felt was a singular honour. It is his dedication that has kept the Sikh Review alive, and I recollect how we often met in New Delhi when my parents lived there during the 1980s.
